Students don’t mind buying $100 ticket for Siti’s London gig

By Rosli Abidin Yahya

The concert of Malaysian “pop princess” Siti Nurhaliza at London’s Royal Albert Hall last night was also watched by Bruneians studying in London.
In a telephone interview with the Weekend, a student who aspires to be a doctor said the tickets to the concert “burned a hole” in their pockets but they did not want to miss the star’s performance in the British capital.

“We purchased the cheaper tickets which cost more than a hundred Brunei dollars,” they said. Tickets were priced at 80, 70 and 60.

The pretty 26-year-old Malaysian pop star created history last night when she became the second Malaysian singer after the late Sudirman Hj Arshad and fourth Asian artiste to perform a solo concert at the famous London venue.

Apart from her Brunei fans in London, organisers told Malaysian newspapers that fans from Brunei also purchased the special concert-cum-holiday package to watch her perform at the Royal Albert Hall. Besides Malaysia, Siti has garnered legions of adoring fans in Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore, and has been voted by MTV Asia as the region’s favourite Malaysian artiste for four consecutive years.

Siti’s road of stardom began at the age of 16 when she won a 1995 television talent contest that launched her career.

Her debut album was released the same year and she now has a total of 14 Malay albums, offering a wide repertoire of mainly love songs - from ballads, R&B (Rhythm and Blues), and pop to traditional - that appeal to a wide spectrum of fans.
