And The Winner Is…

HER achievements in singing have been the talk of the nation.

But local diva Siti Nurhaliza is also a fine songwriter and is in line to gain official recognition for it.

She has been shortlisted as one of the three nominees for the Most Promising Young Songwriter Award in the Malam Gemilang MACP 2002, to be held on Oct 5 at the Istana Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

This category, which is limited to those below 25 years old, also sees two other established songwriters vying for the award.

They are Azhrul Nasir – better known as Along of the band Exist – and Rizal Kamaruzzaman.

Along is most remembered for being the wordsmith for Kapal Terbang Kertas recorded by Exist while Rizal is renowned for the man who penned Sinaran, sung by jazz queen Sheila Majid and also Selamanya, made popular by Innuendo.

Siti’s nomination is largely due to her current chart topper, Percayalah.

But she started contributing lyrics right from her second album, Aku Cinta Pada Mu with Demi Kasih Kita.

In her follow-up outing Adiwarna, she wrote Lagu Ku Di Hatimu and in Safa, besides Percayalah, she also contributed Jalinan Cinta with Hazlan and Engkau Bagai Permata with Sham Amir Husein.

Siti also penned Panas Berteduh, Gelap Bersuluh in her latest traditional pop album, Sangar Mustika.

The nominations for these awards are determined from MACP’s recent distribution results for 2001, based on the most played songs on radio as well as in karaoke lounges, restaurants, pubs and transportation terminals such as bus stations, railway stations and airports and the like.

Started in 1989, Malam Gemilang MACP is a gesture of appreciation and recognition for support given by various quarters throughout the years including the Ministry Of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs, media, licensees, MACP’s own members and also the public.
