All Systems Go For Sept 16 Merdeka Ceremony
JITRA, Sept 14 (Bernama) — Preparations for the Sept 16 Merdeka celebrations and Merdeka Month closing ceremony to be held at Taman Tema Bandar Darulaman here on Friday are proceeding smoothly, Information Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said Wednesday.
He said he was satisfied with the ongoing preparations and hoped that the weather on that day would help enliven the event.
“The preparations for the function are running smoothly and perfectly to enable all the people of the country to celebrate the event on a massive scale full of various glorious events,” he told reporters after witnessing the final preparations for the celebrations.
He hoped that everyone would pray for good weather on Friday so that all the events and programmes that had been arranged could run perfectly as planned.
The ceremony, to be aired live over TV1 starting at 8.45 pm, will see various cultural and other performances by popular local artistes like Mawi, Siti Nurhaliza, Waheeda, Misha Omar, Wings and Alleycats.
Some 300,000 people from Perlis, Penang and Perak are expected to come for the event, besides people from other parts of the country.
The Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, is scheduled to officiate the ceremony that will also be attended by the Sultan of Kedah, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and several Cabinet ministers, menteris besar and chief ministers.
