The popular Siti Nurhaliza herself. Naturally, her presence at the JW Marriott hotel performance sparked speculation about romance between the two.

But Anuar (right), 34, quickly put a stop to the guesswork, saying that Siti (below left) 26, was only showing support for a fellow artiste.

He himself had attended her inaugural solo concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall three weeks ago.

Anuar told Harian Metro: ‘I went to London not only to watch Siti perform but also for a holiday.

‘The date just happened to coincide with my holiday plans.’

But in KL, he singled out Siti – who was said to be smiling broadly – as his special guest.

He kicked off the show by striding up to her table and thanking her for being there.

And he became protective when fans crowded around her.

He actually told them to ‘let her enjoy the food’.

How sweet.

Grooming budding talents on local reality show Mentor

Grooming budding talents on local reality show Mentor

Eight well-known singers will play tutor to participants of TV3’s latest reality TV show Mentor, writes SHEELA CHANDRAN.

Reality TV shows are a big hit these days and TV3 is cashing in on that. Tune in this Sunday to Mentor, a talent search show that aims to unearth a new generation of talented singers.

Although Mentor sounds similar to other talent search shows, TV3 manager of entertainment, sports and recreation Azhar Borhan thinks otherwise.

He said the show is unique as it will see eight finalists – seven solo performers and one group – vying for the coveted title and a chance to kick-start their careers as professional entertainers under the tutelage of eight Malaysian artistes.

“The finalists were chosen from over 2,000 hopefuls during the audition exercise held in eight major cities from February till mid-March.

“The chosen ones showed potential and their talents can be further developed. The singers who are acting as mentors will give professional guidance, counselling, vocal training and pointers in song selections,” Azhar said during the launch of Mentor at KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The mentors are Siti Nurhaliza, Zainal Abidin, Nora, Noraniza Idris, Liza Hanim, Hattan, Ning Baizura and Cat of Ruffedge and the finalists are Dewi Liana Seriestha, Mas Nabiella Nazari, Nabil Zamanhuri, Norafizah Mohd Yasin, Noor Arlinda Lajis, Siti Surianie Julkarim, Fahmi Jaafar and FO’3 (a three-member group comprising Muhammad Zarul Ashidil, Noor Diyana Muhammad and Mohd Syazwan Roslan).

Muhd Suffian Isa produces the 13-episode series and the hosts are singer Ezlynn and XFresh FM radio deejay Johan Farid Khairuddin.

TV3 Entertainment Sports and Recreation production manager Fadzliniza Zakaria said Mentor is different from other reality TV shows as it involves the mentor’s participation. “They get to compete against each other as well. They can speak up on behalf of their protégé when the jury passes remarks about their performance. This has never been done on other reality TV shows.

“The protégés are divided into two groups. In the preliminary rounds, viewers will see four finalists from each group competing against each other. From there, two finalists from each group, with the highest accumulated points, will move on to the semi-finals. Two will then be selected to battle it out in the finals,” said Muhd Suffian.

SMS votes will account for 70% of the total score with the balance coming from the judges. The champion will walk away with a Proton Gen-2, cash RM20,000, two return air tickets to Los Angeles and a Demak motorcycle. The first runner-up will receive RM10,000 and a Demak motorcycle. The mentor of the champion will also win a Proton Gen-2 and Demak motorcycle.

Nora liked the concept of the show. “Mentor is different from other reality shows. It has a good concept because it gives new talents a chance to shine in the entertainment scene. It also enables mentors to show off their creativity.

“I have a month to train my protégé. During this time, I will try to identify my student’s strengths and guide the person in the right direction. Vocal training is important and I will try to get help from other vocalists as well,” added Nora, who is also a cookbook author.

Zainal Abidin chipped in: “I think Mentor poses healthy competition. It will see professional singers training newcomers with talent. This programme is not only about fame. It would help nurture their talent and give them a bright future. Part of the training will be on singing, speaking and how to be a professional singer. I hope to spend at least five hours daily with my protégé.”

Mentor makes its debut on TV3 this Sunday at 9pm.

Divas hold court

Wednesday April 13, 2005

SINGING divas Sharifah Aini and Siti Nurhaliza were the centre of attraction when they arrived at the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court yesterday for the first day of hearing where Sharifah is facing a charge of criminal defamation.

Siti, whom Sharifah allegedly defamed, arrived in court in a demure polka-dotted top and black pants carrying a colourful designer handbag while Sharifah Aini opted for the traditional floral baju kurung.

Their fashion message may have been sweet and simple but their offstage “duel” was enough to attract a big crowd.

Counsel Seeks For A Discharge For Sharifah Aini

April 12, 2005 15:57 PM

PETALING JAYA, April 12 (Bernama) — The Magistrate’s Court here was Tuesday asked to discharge national songstress Datuk Sharifah Aini Syed Jaafar from the charge of defaming popular singer Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin via e-mail.

Her defence counsel, Datuk Muhammad Shafee Abdullah made the application when raising preliminary objection on grounds that the charge against Sharifah Aini was defective and vague.

Muhammad Shafee said that in addition, the charge presented by the prosecution was illegal and did not comply with the provisions under Sections 499 and 500 of the Penal Code pertaining to defamation and slander.

“In a criminal defamation case, you must make the alleged defamatory word clear for a fair conduct of the trial.

“If you did not tell her what you meant in the charge, she could not make her defence of justification and fair comment or, if she accepted that she had said the word, she could apologise,” he said.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim denied that the charge was defective or inferior and said that it was only the opinion of the defence counsel.

“If one looks at it closely, the charge states that Datuk Sharifah Aini had transmitted to Ahmad Shaharil Jamaludin specific allegations and these were the defamation meant under Sections 499 and 500 of the Penal Code,” he said.

On the words that defamed Siti Nurhaliza which the counsel claimed were vague, Suhaimi said that they had been outlined in Appendix A which was submitted together with the charge.

Suhaimi said the charge that Sharifah Aini had defamed Siti Nurhaliza could only be proven through testimonies by witnesses who would be called upon by the prosecution which showed that the defamation had tarnished Siti’s reputation.

As such, he urged the court to reject the preliminary objection raised by Muhammad Shafee.

Magistrate Azroul Hisham Azulan fixed June 16 to decide on the matter.

Earlier, the court had fixed four days beginning today for the trial.

Sharifah Aini, 52, is charged with defaming Siti Nurhaliza through e-mails sent to her adopted brother, Ahmad Shaharil Jamaludin.

Sharifah Aini, who arrived in a black Proton Perdana V6 at 9.55am, is alleged to have committed the offence at her house at No 42, Lorong Utara, off Jalan Utara, here at 4.52pm on Aug 24 last year.

The veteran singer, wearing a black baju kurung with red flowers and matching red shoes and handbag, is charged under section 500 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum two years jail or a fine, or both, on conviction.

Shortly after the court was adjourned at about 11.55am, Sharifah Aini was seen rushing out to her car and saying, “Thank you for coming” to reporters and photographers who had swarmed her.

Siti Nurhaliza, 26, who was also a witness at the trial, drew the attention of the crowd when she arrived at 8.45am for the hearing.

Dressed in black pants and a white blouse with black polka dots, she was accompanied by her brother, Saiful Bahari Taruddin, and sister-in-law, Rozie Abdul Razak.

Other witnesses present were entertainment journalists Zieman from The Star, Sharuddin Mustafa and Ku Seman Ku Hussein from Utusan Melayu.

Also seen at the court was famous composer Ramli MS.

Siti Nurhaliza left the court at 12.05pm in a black Toyota Estima.
