A GLITZY SECOND ERA
30th September 2002
ANUGERAH Era 2002, the local music awards show organised by Era, Malaysia’s top vernacular radio station, successfully completed its sophomore year on Saturday at the Arena of Stars in Genting Hinglands.
The show unveiled the latest winners, voted in by the public through online votes, SMS and post or fax. By the end of the night, local award winning singer Siti Nurhaliza walked away the biggest winner of the event, carrying with her three trophies and RM15,000 cash prize.
For Siti, who looked resplendent in a lilac baju kurung moden, this marked her second big win at the Era awards show. Last year, when Anugerah Era made its debut, she bagged four awards.
At this year’s event, Siti beat the likes of Ziana Zain, Erra Fazira, Deja Moss and Dayang Nurfaizah in the Best Choice for Female Vocalist category.
Her song, Nirmala, was voted as the Best Choice for Ethnic Song and the title’s music video was also chosen as Best Choice for Music Video.
Despite her winning streak, Siti remained humble when accepting the awards, always thanking her supportive legion of fans, friends and family.
The only other artiste that came close to Siti’s number of wins for Anugerah Era 2002 was local rock frontman Izad of Exist fame. His duet with Eva, Dua Insan, won the Best Choice for Pop Song category, while his band Exist was given the special Era Chart Award for the song, Jesnita, which stayed on the charts for 13 weeks.
When receiving his award with Eva, Izad made it a point to thank veteran singer/songwriter and producer, M. Nasir, who penned Dua Insan.

One of more coveted Anugerah Era 2002’s awards, Best Choice for Male Vocalist, went to former Slam lead singer Zamani, who nudged out nominees such as Anuar Zain, Ferhad, M. Nasir and Yassin.
Apart from the award giving ceremony, the night also showcased a string of performances, which got off to a smashing start courtesy of popular rappers, KRU.
Erra Fazira, Indonesian rockers El Em Ent, Intan Sarafina, Pretty Ugly, OAG and Ruff Edge were among the performers that night. The show ended with a bang when the legendary Ramli Sarip, Amy (Search) and Ella closed the show with a medley of their hit songs.
The emcee for Anugerah Era 2002 appeared not in the form of a person but as a virtual one-eyed host, which introduced itself as AE, and announced the performers and presenters rather nonchalantly. In retrospect though, this was one host which did not waste any time and kept the show always on the go.
Among Anugerah Era 2002’s award presenters were artistes such as Ferhad, Hans Isaac, Rashid Salleh, as well as representatives from the Era radio station such as deejay Linda Onn and Era general manager Kudsia Kahar.
Some had come dressed up to the nines, while others like Jay Jay and Maya Karin looked casually gorgeous. The invitations, after all, stated that the dress code was “trendy, hip, funky … tetapi sopan (but pleasing)â€Â.
The night’s shining moments came when Anugerah Era 2002 honoured two of Malaysia’s most prolific artistes – Datuk Rahim Razali and Sharifah Aini. Both veterans received special achievement awards. Rahim received the Anugerah Panggung Era for his long-standing contribution to local theatre, film and sports commentary; while the ever-popular Sharifah received the Anugerah Emas Era for her extensive (35 years, she said) contribution to the local music industry.
The show was carried live on Sept 28 over Astro’s Ria channel with simultaneous broadcasts over Era radio (103.3FM) and streaming over its website at www.dvrplayer.com . The delayed telecast of the show was available on TV3 yesterday.
